Project LAUNCH

Project LAUNCH/Strengthening Families Initiative is a research-informed approach to working with families, childcare centers, and community agencies. Focused on the targeted zip codes of 38106, 38109, and 38126, the goal of the approach is to develop and expand a comprehensive system of high quality services for children from pre-conception to age eight that engages families, supports positive early childhood development, and promotes five key protective factors:

  • Social and Emotional Competence of Children
  • Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
  • Social Connections
  • Parental Resilience
  • Concrete Support in Times of Need

Parent Connectors

As an initiative of Project LAUNCH, the Works, Inc employed 10 parent connectors working in zip codes 38106, 38126, and 38109. The eight-week program taught peer parents how to address the economic and systemic stressors of low-income families that impact early success for children, targeted parents of school-age children, and ensured school readiness. The program's goals included:

  • Increasing positive parenting skills among parent connectors
  • Developing support groups with parent connectors
  • Providing training sessions for parent connectors on brain development, safe sleep, infant mental health and ESCN online referral toolkit
  • Increasing parent connectors’ advocacy skills and involvement in the local community
  • Collecting survey data
  • Working to ensure that parents in these zip codes have access to the necessary resources and information needed to ensure school readiness
